Notes on Hall & Co.
Hall & Co Ltd grew out of the business formed by George Valentine Hall in 1824 shipping stone and lime from the quarries in Merstham by way of the Surrey Iron Railway to Wandsworth, for use in a growiing London and to Croydon and places along the way. Wise to the economics of ensuring a return load, wagons were used to bring back coal from the London wharves, to which it had been shipped by sea, to supply the local gasworks, lime kilns and domestic users
The London and Brighton Railway opened in 1841 and a depot was opened in Croydon at the site of a gravel pit that the company had taken over. This became Victoria Wharf, and the head office for the expanding company which was incorporated in 1898 as Hall & Co., Croydon Ltd. By 1916 it had a fleet of 164 railway wagons and depots on Birmingham and Bristol as well as a network of depots and works in the South and South-East. By 1936 the fleet had risen to 429 and a further 100 wagons were ordered from W.H. Davies and Sons in 1937, one of which could be seen as late as 1965 bearing a recognisable livery, having originally been registered with the Southern Railway and subsequently compulsorily purchased at nationalisation in 1948
Further information on Hall & Co. is to be found in 'A Century and a Quarter' by C. G. Dobson, from which the above is extracted
The company style was generally London red with gold letters and black shading but railway wagons were finished in white letters with black shading
